    The Goal

    The goal of the overall divisional professional development plan, in accordance with our value of Growth and Development, is to help staff make the link between personal development and learning and their role in fostering student success within a learner-centered environment.

    The Divisional Professional Development Plan will follow the ACPA/NASPA Competency Model for Student Affairs Practitioners. The Competency Areas are as follows:

    Advising and Helping
    Assessment, Evaluation, and Research
    Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
    Ethical Professional Practice
    History, Philosophy, and Values
    Human and Organizational Resources
    Law, Policy, and Governance
    Personal Foundations
    Student Learning and Development

    The Competency Areas will be considered as key content areas for the development of topics for training and development and in the assessment and personnel evaluation of staff. A full understanding of the Competency Areas and scheme can be found at:  http://www.naspa.org/focus-areas 

  • Groups


    There are five distinct groups for which we will focus our divisional professional development efforts:

    • New Employees
    • All-Staff (all exempt and non-exempt staff of the division, including Graduate Assistants)
    • Individual Professional Development Plan -for each employee as part of their annual evaluation
    • Extended Leadership Team (Associate VPs, VP office Professional Staff, all Directors and Associate Directors (or other 2nd in command))
    • Leadership Team (Associate VPs, VP office Professional Staff, and all Directors)

    The SAEM Division will have a separate professional development plan for each distinct group.

    • New Employees

      New Employees

      New employees to the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management will undergo a 3-month New Employee Orientation (SAEM-NEO). The NEO will provide information about the institutional mission and vision, the Divisional mission, vision, and values, and multiple other components necessary for the new employee to learn and grow. The NEO will pair the new employee with a seasoned mentor that will help guide the new employee through the stages of learning and growth required of each divisional member. This NEO is in addition to training and orientation at the department level.

    • All Staff

      All Staff

      For All-Staff we will have a monthly mandatory meeting on a topic of importance. We will focus on timely topics that help staff more fully understand their role at the university and how their work, and the work of their department, fits into the larger picture of a learner-centered environment. A central theme will be how each staff member can contribute to the development of students. This will be done within the context and direction of our divisional mission, vision, and values.

    • Individual Professional Development Plan

      Individual Professional Development Plan

      As part of the annual performance review, each employee and their supervisor will develop an individual professional development plan. The plan will be written, and include both internal and external professional development activities. The plan will then be monitored by the supervisor and reviewed on the next year’s evaluation.

    • Extended Leadership Team (ELT)

      Extended Leadership Team (ELT)

      The professional development plan for the Extended Leadership Team (ELT) will focus on leadership and management within the context of our divisional mission, vision, and values. ELT members will learn specific, in-depth techniques to help manage their department. Such knowledge and practice will provide consistency of management and leadership across the division. The ELT will meet monthly throughout the year and the sessions will be led by divisional leadership, other institutional leaders, and outside presenters. Some portion of this monthly meeting will be devoted to information sharing and coordination of programs and services.

    • Divisional Leadership Team (DLT)

      Divisional Leadership Team (DLT)

      The Divisional Leadership Team (DLT), as seasoned leaders and managers in their respective functional areas, will focus on larger divisional and institutional issues. As such, the monthly meetings will be devoted more to information sharing, coordination of programs and services, and discussions of divisional policy and direction. There will be a special focus on collaboration as a key divisional value. Periodically the DLT will take time within the monthly meeting for specific individual professional development leading to more consistent practice across the division. Such development will be presented by divisional leadership, individual members of the DLT, or outside presenters.
