Hello, and welcome to the University of West Georgia! My name is Dr. Micheal Crafton, and I’m honored to serve as interim president of this wonderful regional comprehensive institution. I want to be the first one to tell you that the University of West Georgia is a university like no other. At UWG, we transform lives and change perceptions, constantly challenging ourselves to ask “what if” and “why not.” We refuse to accept that possibilities are limited.

We embrace diversity. We value community. We drive growth. We engage – as students, faculty and staff – and work collectively to be the best comprehensive university in America, sought after as the best place to work, learn, and succeed.

As I begin my tenure as interim president, here are the five things I want you to know about the University of West Georgia:

1. UWG is driven by student success.

With cutting-edge, experiential academic programs, students at UWG are challenged to acquire knowledge and skills outside the traditional academic setting. We provide opportunities for hands-on experience like internships, externships, co-ops, practicums, researching, volunteering, and job-shadowing that give our students the edge when applying for jobs or post-baccalaureate degrees. In addition, our LEAP West! project’s primary goal is explaining, promoting, and advocating for a broad-based, high-quality education as a foundation for entering the world of work, play, and civic responsibility. Our goal in time is an education revolution, as a result of which undergraduate education will be an engaging, compelling, and comprehensive preparation for a truly meaningful and successful life in the real world.

2. UWG is accessible.

With our main campus in Carrollton, Georgia, just an hour west of Atlanta, and locations at UWG Newnan and UWG Douglasville, we offer transformative educational opportunities that fit busy lifestyles. We also offer some of the most robust online programming in the nation, with online doctoral degrees in the College of Education and Tanner Health System School of Nursing ranked in the top 10 nationwide. We offer more than 30 programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels and serve as leaders in the state of Georgia in hybrid in-class and online offerings that offer our students unparalleled flexibility in both undergraduate and graduate degree attainment.

3. UWG is vibrant.

Our 645-acre campus in the Georgia pines is home to some of the best friends you’ll ever have. We enroll students from 38 states and 73 countries, excluding Georgia and the United States. The communities we serve offer students, faculty, and staff the best of both worlds, boasting top-tier recreational amenities to keep their citizens healthy, active, and engaged in small-town settings. We field 13 intercollegiate athletics teams and offer more than 150 student organizations so you’re sure to find your place at UWG. From academic honors societies to fraternities and sororities and the Student Government Association, there’s always something going on out West.

4. UWG is affordable.

Our goal is for students to graduate from our dynamic programs with little to no student loan debt thanks to a wealth of merit- and need-based scholarships available. We are truly state leaders in our commitment to efficiency and affordability here at UWG.

5. Finally, and most importantly, UWG is transformative.

Our students’ lives are fundamentally changed after attending the University of West Georgia. Nearly half of our students are the first in their family to attend college, so they make academic contributions that will last for generations. Our students discover new genes. They perform on Broadway. They serve as ambassadors to foreign nations. They close $3 million in real-estate deals four years after graduating. We’re the third-largest producer of teachers in Georgia, and 100 percent of our Tanner Health System School of Nursing students have a job after graduation. Students who earn graduate degrees at UWG have access to some of the most rigorous, robust academic programming in the nation, ranked in the top third for online graduate education by U.S. News & World Report.

As we begin a new chapter in UWG’s history, we remain committed to showing our progress and success through these five key characteristics. We hope you’ll join us in that commitment to make this journey of discovery both rewarding and truly transformative.
