Media Day 2020


The 39th annual Media Day will be held Wednesday March 4, 2020 in the Campus Center ballrooms on the University of West Georgia (UWG) campus. We will have 5 panelists discussing their education, experiences, career, internships ... There will also be 40 - 50 networking professionals, many of whom graduated from UWG with a degree in mass communications. The list of particpating professionals can be found below.

    Meet the five participants for the 9:30am Panelist Session.

    Headshot of Chris AdamsonChris Adamson is currently the Marketing Manager for Premier Events, the leading event producer in Metro Atlanta. Chris has a passion for events and seeing a project develop from the initial idea and concept to the actual execution. When he’s not figuring out how to get the most likes on a photo on Instagram, he’s spending time at concerts, an Atlanta festival, in the woods, or on Lake Lanier digging into his Georgia roots. Prior to his career in radio, Chris was the founding President of NBS-AERho at his Alma Mater, the University of West Georgia, where he graduated from in 2013 with a B.S. in mass communications with a minor in marketing.

     

    Headshot of Jose Avila-KellyJose Avila-Kelly has spent eight years with CNN, currently in the role of Studio Operations Supervisor. He started off as a camera operator in the studios where he did jib, robo, and video for shows such as MXP with Robin Meade, CNN Newsroom with Don Lemon, and IDESK. After a year and half, Jose was promoted to S.W.A.T. where he became a steadicam operator and was expected to cover any show at anytime. The 2020 presidential election will be his third presidential election with CNN. A native of Brownsville, TX, Jose has two degrees with the University of West Georgia, mass communications (2005) and management (2007).

     

     

     

    Headshot of Kristal DixonKristal Dixon started covering Cobb County with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in February 2019. Before joining the AJC, Dixon worked for Patch.com from 2012 to 2019 and the Cherokee Tribune from 2007 to 2012. She graduated in 2002 from Griffin High School and in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in mass communications from the University of West Georgia where she held different positions at The West Georgian.

     

     

     

     

     

    Headshot of Jasmine JonesJasmine Jones is a Field Marketing Manager at McAlister's Deli. She is an Atlanta native and a graduate of the University of West Georgia, class of 2013. An enthusiastic problem solver, Jasmine provides top-notch internal client service and committed to seeing the big picture, while keeping an eye on the small details. In her free time she enjoys volunteering and cozying up with a good book.

    Director Jason Winn is an independent Director and Producer best known for The Fat Boy Chronicles, Life-time Movie The Assault, Shifting Gears the horror film Dead Thirsty (aka Rave Party Massacre) and the adult drama Let’s Make it. With 20 years of extensive production experience under his belt, Winn has executive produced two feature documentaries and directed the award-winning feature documentary Spiral Bound. Winn’s colleagues and former cast members attribute his continued success to his innate ability to inspire stellar performances from his actors as well as his intuitive talent for making films that are cerebral, emotionally charged, entertaining, and relevant. His ability to consistently deliver first-rate work and stirring performances demonstrates his vision and versatility.

    Media Day visitors park for free in the new Campus Center parking lot, 302 West Georgia Drive in Google Maps. There will also be signs on campus to direct you. Attendants will be at the parking lot to provide a parking pass to display in your car.

    9:00  Registration:

    Students and Networking Professionals, stop by the registration table when you arrive to receive credentials and claim your ticket for the luncheon. You will need this ticket to enter the Honors Luncheon. Unclaimed tickets will be re-assigned.

    9:30  Panel Discussion:

    This year’s panel discussion offers students the opportunity to hear professionals discuss the current state of their industries, describe their career paths and offer insightful tips for students entering those fields. It includes a Q&A component for students to ask direct questions of the panelists. Our panelists’ range of experience covers broadcast media, public relations, convergence journalism, film and video production, and social media.

    10:45  Networking Sessions:

    These sessions are held in the sunlit atrium just outside the ballroom, and offer current Mass Communications students the opportunity to meet and speak directly with over 50 visiting media professionals, many of whom are UWG alumni. All Mass Communications areas of study will be represented in the roster of visiting professionals.

    Dress for the Networking Sessions (and Honors Luncheon) is formal, Business Professional: Slacks and tie or slacks/skirt and blouse, with jackets or blazers recommended.

    The sessions themselves are open and unscheduled, but students should prepare to spend 5 minutes (no more or less) speaking with any given professional, and plan to circulate.

    12:30  Keynote Speaker & Honors Luncheon:

    This ticketed, free luncheon is highlighted by a keynote address by a graduate of The University of West Georgia, and winner of this year's Distinguished Alumni Award.

    Student Honors, Awards and Recognitions will include:

    Academic Achievement Awards, presented to all junior and senior Mass Communications majors who have earned 3.0 or higher GPA.

    Professional Growth & Development Awards are presented to junior and senior Mass Communications majors and minors who have completed or are completing professional development experiences via internships, media-related work or practica with bluestone Student Public Relations Firm, The West Georgian, The WOLF Internet Radio and/or WUTV.

    Mass Communications Scholarship Recipients including the Dora Byron Memorial Scholarship, the Margaret Gauthier Scholarship, The David S. Parkman III Scholarship, the Frances Parkman Scholarship and the George Fields Whatley Scholarship, and the Gordon Watson Award in Mass Communications. 

    2:30  Alumni Social at The Border:

    You are invited to mix and mingle with Mass Communications Alumni at this off-campus social event at The Border.
