The Writing Center's Online Consultations

The University Writing Center (UWC) is open for submissions. We are accepting papers for the Summer 2020 semester from June 8 through July 16 in CourseDen.

We have two options for students to receive help: submissions through dropbox (up to a 48-hour turnaround) and live chatting (MTWR 10-3). Our consultants will not be available Friday through Sunday.

  • We have an Informational video that walks you through the CourseDen course (We have the written directions below for convenience)

Submissions

Directions: Once you have logged into CourseDen, go to My Courses > select University Center Online Consultations > click Assignments > click on the available dropbox > follow the directions provided in the box.

Due to limited staffing, we are instituting a page limit for submissions to 7 pages. You are welcome to upload a larger document, but unless specifically noted in the submission request, the first 7 pages will be all that the consultant references. Consultants have up to 48-hours to return feedback, but they may complete their reviews faster than that.

To retrieve the consultant's feedback, students will need to launch Turnitin after clicking into their submission.

Live Chat

For smaller questions (e.g. grammar or citation related), we have a chat option available.

Directions: Once you've logged into CourseDen, select University Center Online Consultations > click on the envelope icon at the top of the screen > select email > search and select UWC Chat (or copy/paste: pstu_uwcchat@westga.view.usg.edu) to send your message to the consultant on shift.

Retrieving Feedback

Our consultants will primarily take advantage of Turnitin to provide you with comments since it allows quick-marks as well as audio files. To access Turnitin, you just need to follow a few steps. Directions: Click into your assignment > locate Launch Turnitin at the top, right of the screen > click on it to retrieve feedbackLaunch turnitin

If your paper does not automatically open for some reason, just click into your document and then follow the above directions to launch Turnitin to access the consultant's comments.click documentSome consultants may simply provide feedback in the comment section within the assignment. To retrieve this kind of information, you will just need to click into the assignment that you submitted and scroll to the bottom of the screen.feedback comment

Smarthinking

UWG Online, the University Writing Center (UWC), and the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Committee are excited to announce that Smarthinking, the 24-hour online tutoring service, is now available to all currently-enrolled students here at UWG, even students in face-to-face courses. Smarthinking is simple, fast, and always available, and students can connect to live educators from any computer that has internet access at any time, with no special software installation or equipment required.

For a student to have access to Smarthinking, faculty members must request that the service be added into their course(s) via CourseDen. Please see the following document for step-by-step instructions: Adding Smarthinking in CourseDen. Should you have additional questions regarding Smarthinking, please feel free to contact the UWG Online Help Desk, and your inquiry will be directed to the appropriate representative: online@westga.edu or (678) 839-6248.

Grammarly

Grammarly is an automated proofreader that checks for more than 250 types of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. It helps enhance vocabulary usage through word suggestions and also attempts to correct possible plagiarism issues by suggesting text changes and properly formatted citations. You can correct mistakes with a single click. Grammarly’s algorithms flag potential issues in the text and suggest context-specific corrections for grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Grammarly explains the reasoning behind each correction, so you can make an informed decision about whether, and how, to correct an issue. All you have to do is click to accept a suggested correction or dismiss one. Grammarly tracks your personal issues through the week and provides a personal summary report of types of mistakes you made throughout the week.

  • UWG Online's information page for Grammarly breaks down how the website works and how to access it.
