About the Series:

Sponsored by the Sewell Foundation, the SOTA Reading Series brings readers from across the arts disciplines to the UWG campus each semester. All readings are free and open to the public.

The Warren and Ava Sewell Foundation:

The Sewell Foundation is the legacy of Warren and Ava Sewell, whose apparel company vitalized the West Georgia region starting in the 1920s. Since 1946, the Sewell Foundation has continued to improve local communities by supporting a variety of meaningful projects including arts-forward endeavors.

Art Historian Wendy Castenell

Dr. Wendy Castenell's research focuses on African American art, portraiture, gender studies, and representations of race and ethnicity. Her current book project, Creole Identity in the Art of the American South: Louisiana from the Colonial Era to Reconstruction, will be published in 2020 with Routledge/Taylor & Francis. She serves as Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Alabama.

Castenell will be reading on February 24, 2020, at 6:00 pm, in Kathy Cashen Recital Hall, Humanities.
