America Reads/America Counts Program

The America Reads Challenge is an initiative started in 1996 by the Clinton Administration. In August 1996, President Clinton proposed a national literacy campaign that would enlist “one million volunteer tutors ready and able to give children the personal attention they need to catch up and get ahead.”

Each tutor is expected to encourage students in the subject areas of Reading and Mathematics, and support children in their school development. Tutors work directly with elementary students to improve their reading and math proficiency skills. Tutors perform one-on-one work with individual students, group work, or class activities.

To be considered for an America Reads tutor you must be eligible for Federal Work Study, maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, and have transportation to travel to schools in the Carrollton area.
