Career Employment

  • What services do you provide?
    Some of the numerous services we offer include a Career Library with computer lab, Resume Assistance, Workshops, Interviewing Assistance, Job Search Strategy Assistance, Coordination of the annual Teacher Interview Day, Credential files for Education Majors, Resume referral, CareerWeb (required)
  • What is CareerWeb?
    CareerWeb is a service students and alumni use to post their resume and search jobs. Students and alumni may also sign up for on campus recruiting and research these companies with InterviewTRAK.
  • How do I register with CareerWeb?
    Go to our CareerWeb page and follow the instructions there.
  • How do I sign up for an interview on InterviewTRAK?
    Go to http://careerweb.westga.edu and select the red and blue icon "Log onto your CareerWeb Account."  Type in your user name and password.  Once you are logged into the system, select InterviewTrak.  Conduct a date search from today to the end of the semester.  You will see a brief description of the event and general requirements.  Click on the "details" link and do one of the following:  (a) if it is an open interview, select the "sign up for an interview" button OR (b) if it is preselect, select the "submit resume" button.  If you are not eligible for this event you will not see either button and it will indicate "you are not eligible for this event" on the right side of the screen in the table.  After clicking on the applicable link just follow the directions listed on the screen. 
  • What is a Credential File?
    Credential Files are for Education Majors which contain a Resume, Transcripts, at least 3 references, TCT or Praxis scores and anything else a prospective educator would like to include when applying for a teaching position (evaluations, certifications, etc.). The resume, transcripts, references and Praxis or TCT scores are required.
  • How do I start a Credential File?
    Please come by Career Services in 355 Parker Hall and submit a registration packet or call (678) 839-6431 to have a registration packet mailed to you. The registration packet contains a yellow information card, a consent to grant access or release of records, a list of requirements for your credential file, and three blank reference forms. Please completely fill out and return the yellow information card and the consent as soon as possible. Gather the other information on the list of requirements and submit them to Career Services. Once all the information is gathered, we can send your credential file to schools and other employment opportunities.
  • How much does it cost to send a credentail file?
    The first three are free, thereafter, $3.00 per submission.
  • What if I want a copy of my Credential File?
    You may receive a copy of your file. The first one is free, thereafter, it is $3.00.
  • Do I need to sign up for the workshops Career Employment provides?
    No, but when you get to the workshop, make sure you sign in because some professors give extra credit for those students who attend the workshops.
  • How do I get someone to look at my resume?
    If you are an undergraduate or an alumnus (within one year of graduation) with a bachelors degree, seeking full-time employment, stop by or call Career Employment, 355 Parker Hall or (678) 839-6431, and speak with Career Services.

    If you are a graduate student, international student, alumus (out of school more than a year) or seeking internship or co-op positions, stop by or call the Professional Practice Office, 363 Parker Hall or (678) 839-6630.
Co-op
  • How does a student qualify for the Co-op program?
    Minimum qualifications: Students enrolled must have a minimum of a 2.5GPA and must have attended UWG for a total of 30 semester hours (transfer students should have a total of 30 semester hours and/or one semester of attendance at UWG).
  • How does a student get a Co-op job?
    The Co-op office will work with each student to identify major fields of interest. Resumes are referred to companies which are closely aligned with those interests and who have submitted their requirements and job descriptions to the Co-op Office.
  • Are transfer students eligible for the program?
    Yes, as long as they meet the minimum requirements and have the correct number of credits to participate. Please contact the Co-op office as soon as possible to determine eligibility.
  • What if a student is an athlete or can't fit into the standard Alternating Co-op schedule?
    There are two types of co-ops: alternating and parallel. Alternating co-ops work full time every other semester while parallel co-ops work part-time each semester.
  • Is a student considered a full-time student while at work?
    Students are considered full-time while at work and are registered for Co-op 001 during the work term. The Co-op Office can write letters as necessary to maintain insurance and loan programs.
  • Can a student change majors?
    The Co-op program allows students to realistically evaluate their major field and if a student chooses a different major than the one required for their current Co-op, attempts will be made to move the student to a more appropriate position.
  • When can a student begin work?
    Students can begin their work cycle anytime after their freshman year as long as they have at least two work terms available prior to graduation.
  • Where do University of West Georgia Co-op students work?
    A majority of students work either in the Atlanta or West Georgia. There are no restrictions except job availability and personal choice.
  • What about housing while off-campus at work?
    Students choose to live at home, off-campus, or on-campus while on their work assignments.
  • Can a student develop his or her own Co-op position?
    Yes, if the work is related to the student's major and the employer is acceptable to the policies of the Co-op office.
  • Are Co-op students paid?
    Yes, all Co-op students are paid.
  • Is a student obligated to work for their Co-op employer after graduation?
    Co-op employers may or may not offer permanent employment after graduation.
  • Does a student receive special recognition for completing the Co-op program?
    Upon graduation a Co-op student will receive a certificate of successful completion and a student's official transcript will reflect participation in the program.
International Students
  • May I be paid for a co-op or internship?
    You will need three things: 1. Original I-20 (latest one); 2. Job offer letter, on company letterhead, providing a job description, beginning and ending dates of the proposed employment, and number of hours per week that will be worked. 3. A letter from your academic advisor stating the practical training is directly related to your academic program, if the p/t is optional or required, and academic credit will be received .
  • When in the hiring process do I reveal that I'm an international student?
